There is a sweetness and innocence in Ryan DeLuca’s performance that gives the poignant parts a tug of courageous heartbreak. He just seems so defiantly optimistic. The feeling must be similar to what makes married women cry at weddings - they know the pain that lies ahead for the glowing young bride. Such is the bittersweet joy in Arizona Onstage’s production of “The Bible Belt . . . and other accessories” by Paul Bonin-Rodriguez. His play consists of three monologues, each one a separate but related scene. DeLuca is a college freshman at the University of Arizona, playing a small town Texas high school senior. Johnny Hobson is a wise-beyond-his-years teenager who works afternoons with his Mexican-American best friend, Delinda, at the Dairy Queen in Cedar Springs, Texas. He’s got charisma, a unique personality and–although he has yet to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up–confidence galore. All of which is probably why most of the other high school students–jocks, the social elite and, eventually, Christian fundamentalists–distrust him. Johnny, you see, is on his way to becoming his own person. Click here for full review: http://www.tucsonweekly.com/gbase/Arts/Content?oid=oid%3A105469

Kevin O’Neill, the UA’s interim head coach, wanted to play her son, Zane Johnson, that night. He wanted to play Johnson - who had been redshirting this season - off the bench. Robin Bryce’s phone rang last Wednesday afternoon, hours before the UA tipped off at Arizona State. click for full article http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/wildcats/220721

The Bible Belt…and other accessories is a one-man play being performed by my friend’s son @ Zuzi Theatre this weekend. The show times are 8pm Fri & Sat and 2pm on Sunday the 20th.
I have never seen Ryan perform before but, I understand that he began his career here in Tucson performing @the Gaslight and Hidden Valley & many other places. As a student in the Catalina Foothills School District, he performed in the summer theatre programs at the High School. Acting has been his passion and now he is a freshman at the UA in their Actor training program.
I am writing this because I am moving here from California and finally had the opportunity to see Ryan perform….and I was astounded! The play, The Bible Belt, is a 90 minute-no intermission-heartfelt, insightful, funny expose’ on the life of a teenage boy raised in a podunk little town in Texas. Ryan is a “tour-de-force”. I was hooked after the first few minutes. Ryan’s performance transported me to this lil’ Texas town with all it’s idiosyncrasies; the Dominguez/Domingo family, the new teacher in town who happens to be the first African American in their staff, the conflicts of realizing that you’re a gay teenager living in a rapidly changing ‘holier than thou’ environ….and all these characters are portrayed by Ryan alone.
When I asked my friend to let me know when the review came out in the paper and she told me that there wasn’t any yet, I felt compelled to write to you. Performances like this that are acted by an 18 year old, (heterosexual) boy are noteworthy. This young, talented boy deserves your attention and the attention of this community.

Marana’s fight to keep a large portion of town from being labeled a flood plain took a step forward Wednesday, though the town must still ultimately prove to federal officials that flooding isn’t likely to occur in order to prevent hundreds of homeowners from having to buy flood insurance Please click on the following link for the full story. www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/214999.php
