Tucson…A Thriving Economy Where Opportunities Bloom

Tucson Regional Economic OpportunitiesRobust. Growing. Strong.
All describe the region’s economy. In Southern Arizona, the potential for economic progress is skyrocketing with a confluence of three variables: People, Place, and Promise.

People.
The continuing in-migration of people positively impacts the economy and translates directly into increased labor availability. Tucson is rapidly becoming a location of choice nationally, attracting major companies like
Pella Corporation and La Costeña/Arizona Canning Co. LLC.

In late 2006 Pima County reached a major milestone when the population exceeded one million inhabitants. Achieving this milestone will enable Tucson to become a major player nationally, attracting major corporations, retailers, restaurants, arts, theater and a host of other services to the area.

Place.
The region’s strategic central Southwestern location serves as a manufacturing, transportation and distribution center for Mexico, California and the central/western United States. A mild, high desert environment and numerous outdoor activities creates one of the most balanced living/working environments in the country.

Promise.
With a diverse cross-section of prospering business from world-class travel and tourism to a resurging mining sector to a growing presence of “clean” manufacturing, the Tucson region is emerging as a major industrial center. High-tech and manufacturing are on the rise, along with aerospace, optics, biotech and other expanding fields.

The right combination of positive influences make the Tucson region a great place to work, live, play, and most importantly, prosper.  LEARN MORE ABOUT TREO>>

Tucson Business ‘Report Card’!

University of Arizona researchers delivered an economic report card last week for the Tucson region. Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities’ efforts scored pretty well  but as teachers often say, there are areas we can do better.
About 550 people attended the Oct. 2 TREO report card luncheon at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Club.  The report sought to Tucson’s progress in 5 targeted areas developed as part of TREO’s blueprint issued in March 2007. The five areas are: developing high-skill/high-wage jobs, education, making this a more livable region, collaborative governance and fixing downtown. Tucson’s progress was compared to 10 other areas that are primary competitors in economic development - Albuquerque, Austin, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Diego.

The UA Steward Mirror Lab has lifted the lid on its latest 8.4-meter mirror blank and pronounced it near-perfect — ready for a custom grinding and polishing job that will make it the most unusual telescope mirror ever built. It will give astronomers the widest, deepest, most data-filled look at the night sky ever attempted. When it is installed on a Chilean mountaintop in 2015, it will be capable of mapping the entire night sky.  Read Entire Article>>

Voters Cast Ballots In Arizona Primary

Associated Press - September 2, 2008 4:04 AM ET

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona voters cast their ballots Tuesday in the state’s primary election.

The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office says all Phoenix area polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Secretary of State and other election officials are reminding voters to bring a valid ID, which includes an Arizona driver’s license or any form of U.S., state, federal or local government issued identification.

If those documents are not available, voters must bring two forms of identification without a photo, such as a utility bill, vehicle registration or bank statement with their name and address.

Depending on where they live, voters must also vote in the proper precinct.  LEARN MORE>>

Tucson Region UA, ASU get OK for solar energy effort

By Aaron Mackey
Arizona Daily Star
FLAGSTAFF — Researchers at the UA and ASU are hoping seed money from state tax dollars will help transform Arizona into an industry leader in solar energy research and policy.
Under a joint project between the two universities that was approved by the Arizona Board of Regents on Thursday, researchers will use $6.7 million to develop better solar energy technologies that can then be spun off into private enterprises.
Using state tax money that was approved by voters in 2000, researchers at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University plan to look at ways to improve solar technology and develop new ways to harness energy from the sun.
The funding also will cover policy initiatives geared to engaging political, business and industry leaders into developing the state into a worldwide leader in solar energy development.
One solar project at the UA already occurring is looking at ways to store energy collected by solar arrays using salts, said Leslie Tolbert, the UA’s vice president for research.
In one scenario, the energy would be stored in vast salt caves that lie beneath Arizona’s surface. Using the caves as holding cells, the amount of energy that could be stored is equal to two months of energy used in the United States, Tolbert said.
Other research programs are analyzing ways to make solar technology more efficient and smaller, which could decrease the commercial cost of using solar technology. View Article>>
