Swing into fall at any of Arizona’s fine golf courses. This glorious season is locally known for overseeding, cooler temperatures and reasoanble prices on green fees. Fall also means the Arizona return of the PGA TOUR with the Frys.com Open. October, November and December are great months to enjoy golf, either as a participant or a fan! ARIZONA GOLF>>

This is a very easy and popular hike to the incredible Seven Falls. Everyone who lives in Tucson should make the trip at least once. Even though this hike is in the hot lower elevations, I list it as a summer hike because you can cool off in the pools at Seven Falls, and get your clothes wet so they keep you cool on the hike back.
Tucson has tons of incredible hiking trails. Visit www.SierraClub.Org to learn about all the various trails in and around Tucson, the best times for hiking the trails and so much more. SIERRA CLUB TUCSON TRAIL GUIDE

Foliage flourishes on Aspen Draw — The forest high in the Catalina Mountains is a midsummer festival of ferns, wildflowers and fungi.
You can sample the scenery with a hike on the Aspen Draw Trail, which climbs in sylvan splendor at altitudes between 8,200 and 8,900 feet.
Thick clumps of bracken ferns — some emerald green, and others almost silvery in slanting sunlight — flank parts of the trail.
Vibrant yellow columbine flowers sing summer near a trickling watercourse.
Fungi, in the form of reddish-brown mushrooms, decorate some tree trunks and grassy hollows along the route.
The trail, which begins near Mount Lemmon Ski Valley, is popular with hikers looking for a little alpine interlude on hot desert days.
Covering 1.7 switchbacking miles and gaining about 700 vertical feet, the path leads through forests of fir and aspen — home to many bird species and other wildlife.
A hike up the trail and back down makes a pleasant and fairly easy 3.4-mile round-trip trek. Hikers seeking more mileage can connect with other nearby routes, including the Aspen Trail, Mint Springs Trail and Wilderness of Rocks Trail.
Get to the trailhead
Take Tanque Verde Road to the Catalina Highway ($5-per-vehicle fee) and follow the highway past Milepost 24 to a turnoff for Mount Lemmon Ski Valley. Continue to Ski Valley and park. Then walk about 20 yards down the south side of the highway from the ski area parking lot and watch for a trail leading downhill. Follow it for 0.2 of a mile down the side of the hill and across a small watercourse to the signed start of the Aspen Draw Trail.

“Interval training is a great fat-burning workout.” Fred Harvey Director of track and field and cross-country at the University of Arizona
By Doug Kreutz
Arizona Daily Star
Elite athletes offer two words of wisdom to those of us who want to rev up our workouts and make big fitness gains:
Interval training.
It’s a technique — suitable for runners, cyclists, swimmers and others — that calls for alternating bursts of high-intensity effort with intervals of lighter activity.
Athletes credit the method with increasing aerobic capacity, building speed, burning fat and reducing boredom.
“Interval training is the bread and butter of elite athletes and can be a great shortcut to fitness for recreational athletes in most any endurance sport,” says Randy Accetta, president of the Southern Arizona Roadrunners group.
“Essentially, the point is to do a bout of effort followed by a bout of recovery . . . and the variations are endless, depending on the goal and the abilities of the athlete,” says Accetta, an elite-class runner who competed in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

Olympic return
Jennie Finch will look to represent the United States at the Olympics for the second time in her career this summer in Beijing, where she will be one of the pitchers for the gold-medal favorite. Finch, who is one of the most recognized female athletes in the world, made her Olympic debut in Athens in 2004, finishing with a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. In two starts, she threw eight innings, striking out 13 batters and allowing just one hit and one walk. The right-hander played in her first World Championship in 2002 and helped the U.S. win the gold medal. She posted a 2-0 record and 1.17 ERA while striking out 12 batters in 12 innings.
